Happy Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos to everyone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is a significant feast in the Orthodox Church, celebrated on October 14 (according to the New Style \u2014 that is, the modern calendar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feast is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos \u2014 that is, the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. The word \u00abPokrov\u00bb (Protection) signifies defense or shelter \u2014 much like someone covering you with a blanket to keep you safe. Orthodox Christians believe that the Virgin Mary watches over humanity, intercedes for people before God, and shields them from misfortune, as if sheltering them beneath her \u00abveil\u00bb (or mantle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feast is rooted in an event that took place in the 10th century (circa 910 AD) in the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul). At that time, amidst a war, the city was in grave peril. As the people gathered in a church to pray for deliverance, Saint Andrew (known as Andrew the Fool-for-Christ) and his disciple Epiphanius were granted a vision: they beheld the Virgin Mary hovering in the air above the congregation. She prayed on their behalf, then removed the veil from her head (known as a maphorion or \u00abPokrov\u00bb) and spread it out over the people as a sign of her protection. Following this event, the enemy forces retreated, and the city was saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Is This Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This feast day reminds Orthodox Christians that the Virgin Mary serves as a spiritual mother to all believers. She cares for people, offers aid during difficult times, and protects them from misfortune. In the Orthodox tradition, she is deeply revered, and people frequently turn to her in prayer to ask for her assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Is The Feast Of The Intercession Celebrated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. In Churches: Solemn divine services are held on this day. People pray, offer thanks to the Mother of God, and ask for her protection for themselves, their families, and even the entire nation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Folk Traditions: In Russia, the Feast of the Intercession has long been a major holiday. It was traditionally associated with the onset of winter, as the first snowfall \u2014 which often occurred in October \u2014 was likened to the Virgin Mary\u2019s protective veil. Furthermore, it was customary to hold weddings on this day, as it was believed that the Mother of God helps to establish strong families. Young women would pray: \u00abMother of God, cover the earth with snow, and cover me with a groom!\u00bb (\u00ab\u041c\u0430\u0442\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430 \u0411\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0430, \u043f\u043e\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0439 \u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b\u044e \u0441\u043d\u0435\u0436\u043a\u043e\u043c, \u0430 \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f \u0436\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0448\u043a\u043e\u043c!\u00bb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Acts of Kindness: On this day, people strive to be kinder, to help others, and to offer thanks for the protection they have received.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
